Visit Yellowstone National Park

One of the biggest lures to the Bozeman area is Yellowstone National Park (YNP). Established in 1872, YNP is the country’s first ever national park. Located just 90 minutes south of Bozeman, Yellowstone boasts colorful hot springs, impressive geysers, and abundant wildlife.

Not sure how to make the most of your time in the park? Luckily, there are plenty of tour guides and experts to assist you, including Yellowstone Adventure Tours, Yellowstone Excursions, and Yellowstone Safari Co.

Explore Nature's Playground

If you’re looking for outdoor adventures closer to Bozeman than Yellowstone, you’re in luck. The Bozeman area includes endless options for hiking, biking, rafting, horseback riding, and more.

Hiking

Bozeman offers an array of trail options that fit a wide range of skill levels. One of the most well-known trails is the College ‘M’ Trail. Located merely four miles from Downtown Bozeman, this trail offers both a relaxed, leisurely 3.6-mile round trip walk, as well as a more strenuous 1.6 mile climb to the top filled with switchbacks and 750 feet of elevation gain.

A much easier, laid-back hike can be discovered south of Bozeman in the Hyalite Reservoir Recreation Area: Palisade Falls. This 1.2 mile out and back paved trail that leads to a cataract waterfall is perfect for families with small children and strollers. It’s also an ideal hiking choice for a hot summer day as spray from the falls cools down visitors.

Another great trail option if you’re looking for a more moderate excursion is Drinking Horse Mountain Trail. This 2.1-mile loop is located 10 minutes from Downtown Bozeman and is considered a signature Bozeman trail. After a 700 feet elevation gain, hikers can see a beautiful view of Bridger Canyon, perfect for enjoying a beloved Montana sunset.

Finally, hikers looking for a challenge can find one by summiting Sacagawea Peak, the highest point of the Bridger Mountain Range. Located about an hour from Downtown Bozeman, this trailhead is a 4-mile out and back hike characterized by steep climbs and heavy winds. Due to this, hiking poles and quality hiking shoes are often recommended. After a demanding trek to the top, hikers are rewarded with a breathtaking view and may even be lucky enough to spot a mountain goat or two.

No matter what trail you decide to explore, it’s important to follow trail etiquette and leave no trace behind. This includes remaining on the trail, respecting wildlife, not cutting switchbacks, picking up litter, and not drinking directly from lakes or streams.

On the Water

Aptly equipped for various water activities, the rivers in Bozeman’s backyard provide a sanctuary for rafters, fishermen, and more. Both the Madison River and the Gallatin River are excellent choices for aquatic adventures.
