chamber, Propspera and city of bozeman team up to apply for google broadband trial area
Posted March 5, 2010
The City of Bozeman, in collaboration with the Bozeman Area Chamber of Commerce and Prospera Business Network, are applying for the Google Fiber for Communities project, which would allow Bozeman the opportunity to expand and intensify the broadband internet capabilities in the area.
Google Fiber for Communities is an experimental launch of an ultra-high speed broadband network, with the goal of making Internet access better and faster for everyone. Google plans to test the networks in one or more trial locations across the country. The networks would offer fiber-to-the-home connections delivering Internet speeds over one gigabit per second.
“This community application is a true public-private partnership that shows both how well Bozeman works today & how we’re poised to grow in the future. Expanding broadband speed will play to our strengths in education, medicine & quality of life,” states Chris Mehl, City Commissioner.
The city is rallying community support for Bozeman as a site of the project from private citizens, students, governmental and educational organizations, health services, non-profits, private companies, high-tech and pharmaceutical companies and other interested parties.
Then asked what this opportunity meant to him, Brandon VanCleeve of Pine Cove Consulting replied “With our reliance on a virtual office environment, the ability to increase bandwidth capabilities directly affects our company’s productivity and open up opportunities for us to grow into the Bozeman Community.”
Businesses and residents interested in supporting Bozeman’s effort for Google Fiber for Communities can visit the following websites: the City’s website www.bozeman.net; the Chamber’s website www.bozemanchamber.com or Prospera’s website, www.prosperabusinessnetwork.org and click on the Google Fiber for Communities link. Applications must be received by March 26, 2010.
